Selection Process: All About the CBT
The entire selection rests on a single 3-hour Computer Based Online Test conducted in one sitting. There is no interview, no group discussion — purely merit-based selection from the CBT marks.
Test Structure
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | General Knowledge/Awareness, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, General English | 100 MCQs | 100 | Combined 3 hours |
| Paper-II | Professional Knowledge (Discipline-related) | 100 MCQs | 100 | |
| Total | 200 MCQs | 200 | 3 hours |
Key Features of the CBT
- Each question carries 1 mark
- No negative marking for wrong answers
- No marks for unattempted questions
- The paper will be bilingual (English and Hindi) — however, in case of any error in the Hindi version, the English version will prevail
- Candidates can select three preferred test cities in order of preference
Qualifying Marks (Per Paper)
| Category | Minimum Marks (Each Paper) |
|---|---|
| General (UR) / EWS | 40 marks |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 35 marks |

The final merit list is prepared strictly on the basis of CBT marks. For Company Secretary discipline, if there is a tie, preference goes to candidates with listed-company work experience.

Why This Recruitment Matters
For young engineers, geologists, Hindi scholars, and Company Secretaries, this notification represents one of the most attractive PSU opportunities of 2026. With a starting basic pay of ₹60,000, comprehensive benefits, job stability of a Maharatna PSU, and the chance to be part of India's energy security mission, the Coal India Management Trainee role is both prestigious and rewarding.
The selection process — being purely CBT-based with no interview — also makes it merit-driven and transparent. With 660 vacancies on offer and a one-month application window, eligible candidates should begin preparation in earnest, particularly focusing on the discipline-specific Paper-II, which often becomes the decisive factor in merit ranking.
Apply window: 12 May 2026 to 11 June 2026. Don't wait for the last day.
