The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the official notification for UGC-NET June 2026, and if you're aiming for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), an Assistant Professor role, or admission to a Ph.D. programme, this is the cycle to prepare for. The application window is open now, and with the exam scheduled for late June, time is shorter than it looks.
Here's a clean, no-nonsense breakdown of what the bulletin actually says — dates, fees, eligibility, exam pattern, and what's changed.
What Is UGC-NET, Really?
UGC-NET is the national-level eligibility test conducted by NTA on behalf of the University Grants Commission. Clearing it qualifies Indian nationals for one of three career tracks:
- Award of JRF + Assistant Professor + Ph.D. admission (the top category)
- Assistant Professor + Ph.D. admission (no JRF)
- Ph.D. admission only
For Ph.D. admissions under categories 2 and 3, your NET marks carry 70% weightage, and the interview at the university carries the remaining 30%. The NET score stays valid for one year from the date the result is declared, so timing your applications matters.

|---|---|
| General / Unreserved | ₹1,150 |
| Gen-EWS / OBC-NCL | ₹600 |
| SC / ST / PwD / PwBD / Third Gender | ₹325 |
Bank service charges and GST are extra. And one important note: fees once paid are non-refundable under any circumstances.
UGC NET Eligibility — Who Can Apply?
Master's Degree Holders
- General / Unreserved / EWS: At least 55% in Master's degree (no rounding off)
- OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / PwBD / Third Gender: At least 50% in Master's degree
Candidates currently in their final year of post-graduation can also apply provisionally, but must clear their degree with the required percentage within two years of the NET result (or one year if qualifying for SSC "Ph.D. only").
Four-Year Bachelor's Degree Holders
A welcome inclusion: students with a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree holding at least 75% aggregate (with 5% relaxation for reserved categories) can also apply. However, they're eligible for JRF and Ph.D. admission only — not for the Assistant Professor track. They can also pick any NET subject for Ph.D., regardless of their UG discipline.
Age Limit for UGC NET
- For JRF: Maximum 30 years as of 1 June 2026. Five-year relaxation available for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, Third Gender, women, and candidates with relevant research experience. Three years' relaxation for LL.M. degree holders.
- For Assistant Professor: No upper age limit.
- For Ph.D. admission: No upper age limit.
Exam Pattern
UGC-NET June 2026 will be conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only in cities across India.
| Paper | Marks | Questions | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | 100 | 50 | Teaching/research aptitude, reasoning, reading comprehension, general awareness |
| Paper II | 200 | 100 | Subject-specific domain knowledge |
- Total duration: 3 hours (180 minutes), with no break between papers
- Marking: +2 for every correct answer
- Negative marking: None
- Medium: English and Hindi (except language papers)
- All questions are objective-type, multiple choice
If a question has multiple correct answers, ambiguity, or is dropped entirely, full marks Admit Card (+2) are awarded to candidates who attempted it. The English version of any question is treated as final in case of translation disputes.

UGC NET How to Apply: The Three-Step Process
- Register online using your own email ID and mobile number. The application portal is integrated with MeriPehchaan, the Government of India's National Single Sign-On platform, so you can log in via JanParichay, DigiLocker, or e-Pramaan.
- Fill the application form and upload a live photograph (with 80% face visible against a white background), a scanned passport-size photo (10KB–200KB), and your signature (4KB–30KB).
- Pay the fee via SBI, Canara, ICICI, or HDFC payment gateways using card, net banking, or UPI.
Once payment is successful, download and save the Confirmation Page — that's your proof of submission. If it doesn't generate, contact the payment gateway helpline immediately.
A critical reminder from the bulletin: NTA does not edit or modify any information after submission, except during the brief correction window (22–24 May). So fill it carefully the first time.
Reservations
UGC-NET follows the Government of India's reservation policy for Central Universities:
- SC: 15%
- ST: 7.5%
- OBC-NCL: 27%
- Gen-EWS: 10%
- PwBD (40%+ disability): 5% within each of the above categories
Provisions Bihar Police SI for Persons with Disabilities (PwD/PwBD) include scribes, readers, and compensatory time, governed by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Candidates can either request an NTA-arranged scribe or bring their own (whose qualification must be one step below the candidate's own).
A Few Things Worth Highlighting
- Score Card via DigiLocker & UMANG: NTA plans to enable downloads of score cards and other documents through these platforms in upcoming phases.
- Data sharing: Your application data may be shared with Higher Educational Institutions for Ph.D. admissions and with PSUs for recruitment.
- No documents to be sent by post: The entire process is online. Don't mail anything to NTA.
- JRF validity: The JRF offer is valid for three years from the date of the award letter.
If you're planning to appear, here's the short list:
- Visit ugcnet.nta.nic.in and register before 20 May 2026.
- Download the Information Bulletin and your subject's syllabus from ugcnetonline.in/syllabus-new.php — NTA will not send it to you.
- Keep digital copies of your photograph, signature, and category certificates ready.
- Double-check your category, subject code, and exam city choices before final submission. Corrections are limited to a three-day window.
The exam is six weeks away from the application deadline, and Paper I — being common to all subjects — is where most candidates leave easy marks on the table. Reasoning, comprehension, and research aptitude reward steady daily practice more than last-minute cramming.
Good luck. The cycle is competitive, but the structure rewards consistent preparation more than it does brilliance.
